Police tape cordons off a bloodied garage at 58 Canoe Cres., near Morningside and Finch Aves., last night after a woman and a man were found shot in the head. (Dave Abel/Sun) Two people are dead following a double shooting on a quiet north Scarborough street last night.
A woman in her 50s and a man in his 30s were rushed to Sunnybrook hospital after both were found shot in the head in the garage at 58 Canoe Cres., near Morningside and Finch Aves., around 8:30 p.m.
Toronto Police Duty Insp. Randy Franks said the woman who lives at that address came home to find both people in the garage and called 911.
Franks couldn't say whether police believe the shootings were a murder-suicide, but he did say they had no suspects or witnesses.
"We did find ammunition in the garage but there was no sign of a weapon," Franks said. "We are still waiting for our forensic identification people to go in."
As police canvassed the new Emry Homes development, neighbours poured out of their homes to see what was happening.
Some reported hearing three gunshots while others were surprised they didn't hear anything.
"The police opened the garage and there was a man lying there on the ground and there was blood all around," said youngster Amani Ali, who was riding her bike on the street.
Residents said a young couple live in the home with three children under age 5 and a man in his 60s.
Franks confirmed there were three kids in the home but they were unharmed, he said.
Officers moved the sleepy children from the house around 10:30 p.m.
"They're quiet people, I don't mind them," said Jupiter Engracia, who was working on his car in his driveway when police pulled up, jumped out of their cruisers and drew their weapons.
Police could not confirm the relationship between the victims or the homeowners, saying homicide detectives would release more details today.
Residents of the area were shaken by the horrific violence.
"I'm a little scared because we came from central Scarborough and there were some things happening there," Bernard Masei, 16, said. "We moved here to get away from that."
They are the city's 36th and 37th homicide victims of the year. Their names have not been released.
Anyone with information should call the Toronto Police homicide unit at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS. Previous story: Angels of change Next story: Murder victim had life of crime
